What Split and San Francisco have in common

What do Split and San Francisco have in common? A Golden Gate!

Around the corner from our hotel is one of the four entrances to Emperor Diocletian's Palace, this one called the Golden Gate. (The other three gates into the palace are Bronze, Silver, and Iron.)

Diocletian was the only emperor ever to retire and built the palace as his retirement home. The palace later became the town of Split and its labyrinth of streets is a humming hive of ancient ruins and modern Game of Thrones tours. Around one corner a 3500 year old Egyptian sphinx and down another alley a CBD pot vending machine.

Diocletian's bust, found in the lower chambers of the palace, makes me think Sean Connery should have starred in a movie about the emperor.
