Linz Re-torte

In Linz I chatted up a local and asked if Linzer torte was from Linz, my attempt at a joke. She retorted that indeed it was and that we should try the most famous version at Jindrak Konditerei, the oldest bakery that makes the traditional version. Coined in 1696, the Linzer torte is the oldest cake named after a place — Linz! We rolled up to the bakery and, while buying a small version to go, the baker asked if I was from Sweden and invited me into the kitchen. He was busy creating the lattice tops with a special tool. He told me they make 110,000 a year by hand. See if the video link works!

  1. Did you tell him you're Canadian? Was the behind the scenes tour only for Swedes? I do like that lattice maker, very efficient. Trust you to have a cake carrier on the back of your bike.
