In a country with so much good bread, it's odd that waffles maintain such popularity. The thin and crispy "5-heart" shaped waffles apparently are served as part of the afternoon kaffeeklatsch tradition rather than at breakfast. At the Christmas markets, the Belgian version pops up everywhere, probably because these larger versions can hold elaborate toppings in neat squares.
