Going for the gold

I was hell-bent to see the Olympic Park even though all reports said it was under security lockdown. Carol, Syl and I ventured out with only a very general idea where to go. We emerged in east London at a Tube station with absolutely no signage to the biggest sporting venue the country has ever had. Maybe the signs were still at the printer. I zeroed in on a friendly looking couple with a map (from Fresno!) and learned they were meeting for a walking tour of the Olympic Park in a few minutes. What luck! So we joined in the guided 2-hour walk in the rather rundown 'hood that will soon be regentrified thanks to the Olympics. We walked across the Greenwich Meridian where Greenwich Mean Time originates and put our feet in 2 hemispheres. Bonus! We saw several Olympic venues including the opening ceremony stadium (Danny Boyle is directing the show and will create a cloud with real rain which seems absurd considering the chance of real rain is practically guaranteed), the  track, aquatic center, corkscrew viewing platform, ring of security, British army and the official mall of the Olympic Games where we took photos with the freakish Olympic mascots.

  1. You live a charmed life, Ann! You were in the right place at the right time. I agree with your assessment of the likelihood of the rain seeding coming off ok. And WHY do the Olympic mascots always look so freakish? So they're memorable?
